Visual Saturday: The Civil Wars
When it was announced in late 2012 that The Civil Wars were going on hiatus for “internal discord”, we were devastated here at Aural Eyes. The duo of John Paul White and Joy Williams are two of the best vocalist in music today, and we are yearning for more music from them!
At the Grammy awards this past Sunday, if you watched the web telecast, you saw the band add another Grammy to their collection, winning the “Best Song Written For Visual Media” award for “Safe & Sound” (with Taylor Swift). Despite our extreme happiness for the band, things could not seem more awkward as Joy and John Paul accepted their award separate from each other and seemingly avoiding contact with each other. Clearly there is still conflict.
Now obviously we don’t know the details, so we can’t judge. And even though we’re being completely selfish here because we want more music from them, we genuinely hope that the two of them can work out whatever was causing the conflict not only for the band’s sake, but for their own sakes as well. We wish Jon Paul and Joy the best, and we hope to here from them really soon!
In the meantime, here are videos of the band playing two of the best covers we’ve ever heard. The first is a playful, humorous and beautiful rendition of the Smashing Pumpkins’ smash hit “Disarm”. The second is a sexy, soulful and stripped down version of Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”. Both were performed at Amoeba Records in Hollywood.
